Indians of the Lenape Tribe occupied the land now called Closter. They were displaced by the Europeans, predominately the Dutch. For 200 years Dutch was the common language. English was not taught until 1770. Most of the Colonial architecture in the Hudson River Valley was Dutch in origin and over 20 of these original homes still remain and are still used by Closter residents. No other town in Bergen County boasts so great a concentration of houses built in or prior to 1740. By an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 17, 1889, a portion of the old Union Township was incorporated under the name of Boiling Springs Township. The new township took its name from a spring in the community. On March 28, 1894, the Borough of East Rutherford was created, based on the results of a referendum held the previous day, and Boiling Springs Township was dissolved. While there was no change in its borders, the name and form of government were changed. East Rutherford's claim to national fame is that it is the home of the Meadowlands Sports Complex.

In November, 218 years ago, the site the Borough now occupies was the scene of a heroic encounter that changed the course of our nation. An unknown farmer riding from the north over our cliffs warned General Washington’s men, camped on the crest of the Palisades at Fort Lee, that the British were coming. The early warning allowed Washington to make his successful strategic retreat and thus avoid confronting the numerically superior British force. General Washington’s small group of brave but ill-equipped and trained patriots would surely have been defeated. Had General Washington been captured as planned by British general Cornwallis, it is conceivable that the Revolution War would have been lost.

Remembering where their journeys had begun, the Manhattan Dutchmen who crossed the Hudson to establish a trading post on a lesser river about 4 miles west called their site New Barbados. For 274 years, the name, as well as the architecture of some buildings and institutions retained the Dutch stamp. Not until 1921, in an act traded euphony for a city charter, did New Barbados become Hackensack an Indian term meaning "Place of Sharp Ground." One of the major 20th century projects in the vicinity was the draining of the tidal marshes known as the Meadowlands, which covered 30 square miles South of Hackensack.
